Three groups of spiritual gifts

The purpose of the fivefold ministry is to bring the church to maturity. (Ephesians 4:9-16)
How does this work?
The reward of fivefold ministry is seeing the body of Christ built up and strengthened. The fivefold ministry is not about building the ministry of leaders. God is trying to get the ministry back in the hands of the people. Jesus brought the gifts to give to us, so a leader’s place is to equip others. Instead of a few people doing ministry in the church, the whole church is equipped and released to minister. Everyone gets involved in ministry.
The fivefold anointings break yokes. Isaiah 58 should become a reality in the body of Christ.
- Breaking yokes outside the church
- Breaking yokes in the church
The fivefold minister wants the anointing to stay after they leave. There should be a permanent deposit and/or impartation.
Goals of the fivefold ministry
- Edification – Build people up
- Unification – Unite the body together.
- Preparation – Practical equipping and impartation
- Reconciliation – Recognizing how the gifts work together.
- Confirmation – Affirm and train others in the same anointing.
Requirements of a fivefold minister
- Character – All fivefold ministers should be a committed part of a local church.
- Understand authority and fields of ministry.
- Submitted to local leadership
- Model ministry (be a role model)
- Free of a “title-hungry” mentality – not looking for a title or position
Levels of fivefold ministry growth
- Minister in small groups
- Minister in the local church
- Family of churches (church to church)
- Released to minister to the entire body of Christ
While some fivefold minsters grow to minister at all these levels, many have a measure that does not rise to all four levels.
Accountability at each level is key
- Small Group and Church – Accountability is to the local elders for oversight
- Family of churches – Accountability for ministry is to the regional apostolic council and to the local church for personal life.
- Body of Christ – Accountability is to the apostolic leaders but still local church for personal life.
Characteristics of the fivefold gifts
- Apostle – Desire to see expansion; start and plant small groups and churches
- Prophet – Don’t just prophesy; see larger issues in the church; burden for church
- Evangelist – Desire to see people saved; train others to do this
- Pastor – People open their heart to them; they bring news
- Teacher – Hunger for the Word; desire to teach; disciple the teaching gift in others
As a minister, I am the one who is responsible for developing a fivefold ministry gift. It is to be done in humility, with a teachable spirit. Again, all fivefold ministers should be a committed part of a local church. Understanding authority and fields of ministry is essential, because a lot of fivefold ministry is done in another’s field.
The gift can be developed through reading, being mentored, attending conferences, or asking for prayer from a fivefold minister. Always seek correction and remain accountable. Practice using the gift and ask for input.
“Your gift makes room for you” (Proverbs 18:16).
