I believe it was Jerry Rice, the most famous wide receiver of all time, who said, “Today I will do what others won’t so that tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t!” Appears to be pretty sound advice to me. It speaks to us as individuals who make individual decisions about life; how much we will do, how far we will go, how committed we will be, to see the end result become a reality. There will always be those who are looking for the easy path, the one less difficult, the one that is accepted by the masses, the prize without discipline so to speak, but that is not where I want to be.
Paul said it this way when he was talking about athletes and discipline. 1 Cor 9:25 All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. (NLT) While I am excited about earthly prizes (Yes, I love to win), I am more concerned about the eternal prize that the Lord has in store for those who love Him. And to that end I try and discipline my life and body.
What I am desiring to see in reality tomorrow must first be seen in the spirit today. And then proper steps need to be taken in order that what I see in the spirit today can become a reality tomorrow. It is no surprise that not everyone is willing to take the necessary steps to experience in the natural what they have seen in the spirit. But I want to be one of those who will do what others won’t so that I can experience what others can’t. Discipline! It is part of the Kingdom of God. Embrace it.
