I was driving the other day and drove through a “zone” where I smelled a skunk for a few hundred feet. Because of what I was doing, sometime later, I drove through the same “zone”. I was again reminded that a skunk was in the area because he had left his peculiar scent thereby alerting all nearby that he was there and not to be messed with. While I certainly couldn’t see him, I knew he was there by the fragrance he left behind.
For those who are involved in hunting white tail deer, they say that if you do not use any kind of masking scent and you touch a branch or bush while you are walking through the woods hunting your trophy, the deer can smell your scent for up to eight hours after you have walked by. Amazing!
Each year 12 billion dollars are spent in the USA and Europe on perfumes to make sure that the fragrance we leave behind is a good one. So here is my question. We know we leave scents behind in the natural, but what kind of spiritual scent do I leave behind. What fragrance do I leave in any given situation that lingers long after I leave. Is my spiritual fragrance one that will draw others to Jesus or cause them to wonder, what was that?
Paul writes to the Philippians, “Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God.” 4:18 NKJV
May you be as conscious today of your spiritual fragrance as you are of your natural fragrance and may the aroma you leave behind be sweet to those whom you come in contact with.
